  • Emma Chapman was born in Liverpool c 1825. In 1842 Emma entered the Royal Academy of Music in London with singing as her major branch of study. She received a certificate of qualification to teach singing, pianoforte and harmony in April 1846 and just 7 weeks later on 26 May 1846 she married Raphael Joshua Joseph. Following their marriage they embarked for Cape Town. In October 1846 a South African newspaper advertises the following: "MUSICAL ACADEMY - Mrs. R.J. JOSEPH, from the Royal Academy of Music, London, and Pupil of Signor CRIVELLI, begs to inform the Ladies of Cape Town and its Vicinity that she intends receiving a limited number of Pupils at her Residence, No.11 Keizersgracht, for the purpose of imparting a thorough knowledge of the Piano-Forte, Singing and Harmony. The Terms may be ascertained on application." Not much is known of Emma's life in Cape Town. She had a son in 1847 and there is a still a listing for her husband Raphael in 1863. By 1867 he was resident in Melbourne, Australia. Emma's music albums came to Australia with her husband and her son Joshua. It is presumed Emma died in South Africa.
