Biography
  • 2027 Private Percy Armstrong of Ebenezer, Queensland, was a 22-year-old farm labourer when he enlisted on 6 April 1916. He was posted to 41st Battalion and embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray on 7 September 1916. In February 1917 he left for France with 42nd Battalion, and spent months in and out of trenches, digging cables around Armentieres, and holding the line at Messines. On 31 July 1917 Percy was severely wounded, with gunshot wounds to the right arm, shoulder and buttock. Rejoining his unit in November, he was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 1918, and in October was transferred to 41st Battalion. After the armistice he completed a ‘Sheep and Wool’ course in France, toured Ireland, and finally arrived back in Brisbane in August 1919. Percy returned to the farm at Ebenezer, married Alison Dickson Cairns in 1927 and raised a family. He died in 1947, aged 54 years.
