Biography
  • Poet and author. Max Williams was born in Sydney in 1930. At the age of ten Williams became a ward of the State and began a long period in institutions, first in boys' homes and then in prison in New South Wales. In Parramatta Gaol Williams joined a writer's group and, during 1973, emerged as a poet with the publication of Poems from prison, a collection of works by Jack Murray, Eric Mackenzie, Robin Thurston and Williams. Since his release from prison in 1974, Williams has published several collections of poetry including The poor man's bean (1975), Hard is the convict road (1977), Baronda (1977), and The unforgiving poem (2000). His poetry has also appeared in the Australian, and New poetry, among other literary journals. He has also written an autobiography, Dingo! My life on the run, published in 1980. Williams has lectured to students at universities and participated in poetry readings, including at the Opera House.
