  • Official correspondence and administrative records of offices of the Observatory, located in Washington, D.C., including those of the Superintendent, Nautical Almanac, Librarian, and the Superintendent of Compasses and Instruments, concerning the various activities of the observatory and tracing its development from its origin in the Depot of Charts and Instruments, U.S. Navy Dept. Subjects include astronomical observations and computations; experiments to measure the velocity of light; astronomical instruments, charts, and publications; the eclipse expeditions of 1860, 1869, and 1878; and the Centennial Exhibition of 1876.
  • Includes correspondence of Superintendent Matthew Fontaine Maury with ship captains who collected data on ocean winds and currents from which navigation charts were assembled. Subjects in Maury's correspondence with George Manning include Atlantic soundings, an Atlantic telegraph cable, trade on the Amazon and other South American rivers, and an expedition to the Arctic by Henry Grinnell. Correspondents of the United States Naval Observatory Nautical Almanac Office include William L. Elkin, William Ferrel, Asaph Hall, Joseph Henry, Edward S. Holden, Albert A. Michelson, Maria Mitchell, C.H.F. Peters, Edward C. Pickering, Truman Henry Safford, Ormond Stone, David Todd, Alexander Twining, and Charles A. Young.
