Summary
  • John Bentham Neales was a businessman and a politician in the early days of South Australia and is remembered as "The Father of Mining". In 1841 he worked the Wheal Gawler silver lead deposit at Glen Osmond, then Montecute. The company later opened the copper mine at Burra which made him a considerable fortune. He helped found the South Australian Mining Association.
