Summary
  • Papers of the Wilson, Major, Strawbridge, Giles and Tyrrell families, and related UK families, collected by Shirley Cameron Wilson. The earliest donations relate to Charles Algernon Wilson and his daughter Emily A.L. Wilson, comprising a small collection of invitations, menus, toast lists, dance programmes and 2 volumes of autograph signatures of nineteenth century South Australians. Between 2003 and 2006 a very large collection of family papers was donated by Shirley Cameron Wilson's executors after her death. The papers cover nearly 200 different archival series in a variety of subjects in many different formats including correspondence, original artworks, published material, photographs, militaria, realia and interviews on audio-cassettes, reflecting in particular her great interest in her family history and women artists, which resulted in her two publications: "The Bridge Over The Ocean" in 1973, a history of her ancestor Thomas Wilson, his art collection and the establishment of a SA family dynasty, written in association with Mr. K.T. Borrow, and "From Shadow Into Light: South Australian Women Artists Since Colonisation", in 1988. Other papers donated at the same time will be incorporated into PRG 627 for the King family.
Biography
  • Charles Algernon Wilson was born in London, England in 1818. Emigrated to South Australia with his parents (his father was Thomas Wilson, second mayor of Adelaide) aboard the 'Duke of Roxburgh' in 1836. Entered Government service in 1846. Appointed Registrar of Probates and Commissioner of Inland Revenue in 1858. Married Matilda King (ca.1836-1909) in 1860. Appointed first Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court in 1876. Renowned entomologist and early member of the Adelaide Philosophical Society. Contributed entomological articles to newspapers under the name of 'Naturae Amator'. Died in 1884. His granddaughter Shirley Cameron Wilson was born in 1918 at Kadina and died in 2003. In 1911 her father Dr Charles Ernest Cameron Wilson married Nellie Edith Strawbridge (daughter of William Strawbridge ISO, late Surveyor General of SA, and his wife Elizabeth Steel), and had four children: Honor 1913, Yvette 1914, Charles 1916 and Shirley. She accumulated and sorted the papers of her father, grandfather and great-grandfather Wilson, her aunt Emily A.L. Wilson, her mother's Strawbridge heritage and her own sisters' after their deaths. She was a regular correspondent with her UK Wilson relations and visited them on her many trips abroad. At the time of her death Shirley Cameron Wilson had almost completed the manuscript for publication about her relative the explorer John William Billiatt. In 1999 Shirley Cameron Wilson was awarded the medal of the Order of Australia.
