Biography
  • The South Australian RSL was originally formed as the Returned Soldiers Association (RSA) during a meeting at the Cheer-Up Hut on 8 December 1915. The National RSL evolved as a direct result of the camaraderie, concern and mateship shown by the 'Diggers' for the welfare of their mates during and after the 1914-1918 War. In June 1916 the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) was formed, with the first congress held in September 1916 with delegates from QLD, SA, TAS and VIC. In April 1917 the South Australian charter was granted by the National organisation. In 1940 the name changed to the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA), in 1965 the name changed the the Returned Services League of Australia (RSL), and in 1990 changed again to Returned & Services League of Australia Limited (RSL). The ideals and objectives of the RSL include: to perpetuate close friendships among servicemen and women; preserve the record and memory of those who suffered and died for Australia; provide for the sick, wounded and needy among those who have served and their dependants; and to promote the unity of the Commonwealth, defence of Australia, and loyalty to the Nation.
