Summary
  • Walter Shiers (1889-1968) speaks of his youth; enlisting and joining the Light Horse in World War I; serving in Egypt; transferring to the Australian Flying Corps when formed in 1916 and being assigned as mechanic to C Flight with Captain Ross Smith; accompanying Smith, after the Armistice, on the first flight from Cairo to Calcutta; receiving the Air Force Medal; accompanying Ross and Keith Smith on their prize winning flight from London to Australia, completing this flight in under 28 days, despite many adversities. He recounts details of these pioneering flights.
