  • Papers of Hal and Sadie Pritchard comprises records relating to Left Politics, the Communist Party of Australia, peace and anti-Vietnam War activism, anti nuclear energy, government architecture, the environment and the economy, and South Australian Jewish history. The papers include correspondence, photographs and slides, badges, newsletters, publications, notes and writings, minutes, reports, information, advertising, conference papers, newspaper clippings and articles, and theatre programmes. Also includes medals and items from World War II, and a botanic specimen book from Edgar Willie Pritchard.
Biography
  • Halcyon (Hal) Thoreau Pritchard (1916-2011) served in the Australian Army during World War II, and became a government architect after discharge with the Public Buildings Department. As an architect he worked on schools, prisons, office buildings, and other projects. He was a member of the Communist Party, which included being secretary of the Enfield Prospect Branch. He married Sadie (nee Saunders) in 1944, and together they were very active in the peace movement and anti-Nuclear energy movement. Hal Pritchard was involved with many groups, political parties and committees, but had a strong focus on looking after the environment in a sustainable way.
  • Sadie Pritchard (nee Saunders), born 1911, was the daughter of inventor Lewis Ernest Saunders, and was a historian of the local Jewish community. She also volunteered for the Women's International Zionist Organisation.
Notes
  • Various advertising leaflets and flyers for organisations like "Campaign for Peace in Vietnam", C.A.N.E , and "The Australian Democrats-SA Division", and a poster from the "Vietnam Moratorium Campaign" for a "Street Poetry Reading" have been removed and placed in the State Library's Ephemera Collection. Other items that have been removed and catalogued separately into the South Australiana collection are "Australian Democrats Information Hand book"; "Young Australian Democrats (SA) Division, State Constitution" ; SA Nurses Federation Conference - Topic Health - Australian Democrat Speeches No. 140 - Senator Meg Lees ; "How we get there matters" State Transport Plan for South Australia. Draft for discussion Aug. 2007. Australian Democrats: "A vote for citizenship", Youth Affairs Council of SA 1995; "Populate and Perish, Exploding the myths.
