This photo of A.J.C. Chairman Colin Stephen (left) was taken outside St Stephen's Presbyterian Church in Phillip St, Sydney, on 24 March 1932. The occasion was the funeral of A.J.C. Secretary Charles Cropper, who had passed away two days previously.

A cropped version of the photo was published in the 24 March edition of The Sun:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/230125023
the caption to which identifies the man with Stephen as Mr E. A. Smith (a Sydney trainer).

In relation to the photo caption it should be noted that Colin Stephen did not receive his knighthood until January 1935.

JPEditor I think this E.A. Smith is the then veteran Sydney solicitor Ernest Augustus Smith, of the law firm Macnamara & Smith...I gather he would have known Stephen via their mutual interests in the law and racing...Smith was evidently at one point solicitor to the AJC...he died in 1938 at age 88, so he would have been ca. 82 at the time this pic was taken...he was the father of artist Grace Cossington Smith...

Anyway, this is a good find...I searched for this pic on and off for months with no success...so well done!

q.m., I am in full agreement with your identification of Mr. E. A. Smith as the Sydney solicitor Ernest Augustus Smith, and thankful that you didn't accept my rather lax belief that it was the Sydney racehorse trainer. It seems I was a bit too hasty in assuming that there could be only one E. A. Smith with a racing connection.

Thanks very much for the correction accompanied by your trademark comprehensive proof!
