  • Inscribed on plywood backing board in white chalk: LATE MRS.BIDDLECOMB.(sic)/​from AITKEN,WALKER + STRACHAN/​ST.JAMES BLDNGS./​123 WILLIAM ST./​CITY./​FOR/​OVERSEAS/​MULLALY + BYRNE.
  • Inscribed in black ink on gummed paper label adhered to plywood backing board l.l.:Mrs H.C.Trench/​Bracknell./​Berks-/​England.
  • Frame: contemporary timber, gilt and gesso.
  • Portrait was painted in London.
  • Janet Russell (1866-1954) inherited Golf Hill after her only brother Philip arranged for her to take over the property before his death in 1898. With her husband, Commander John Biddlecombe (1869-1929), whom she married in 1900. Janet successfully managed the property as a celebrated Hereford stud, before accepting its partial subdivision for soldier settlement after World War II. This portrait was painted during a visit by Mrs Biddlecombe to her relatives in Scotland. It was presented to the Library by her great-niece in 1980.
