Biography
  • Boori Monty Pryor is an Aboriginal Australian writer and poet from North Queensland. Also an accomplished didjeridoo player, Boori has played with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and performed in Sydney for the Pope and 300,000 people at the Beatification of Mary McKillop. Boori Pryor has performed for school children in England, Italy and Austria, and spoke at a conference in Northern Ireland. In 1993, he received an award for the Promotion of Indigenous Culture from the National Aboriginal and Islander Observance Committee. His first book with Meme McDonald "Maybe tomorrow" was shortlisted for the CBC book of the year and, with Meme McDonald, he won the prize for young adult fiction in the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards in 2002 for "Njunjal the sun".
  • The Victorian Premier's Literary Awards were established in 1985 to commemorate the births of Vance and Nettie Palmer. They award Australian writers of outstanding books in a variety of categories. From 1988 to 1995, the children's literature prize was the Alan Marshall Award, sponsored by Diabetes Australia. In 1996, a new sponsor and focus redirected this towards young adult writing (readership between 13 and 20) and it became The Sheaffer Pen Prize for Young Adult Fiction, the Cross Pen Prize from 1999 to 2000, the Herald-Sun Prize for Young Adult Fiction in 2001, and the Kraft Foods Prize for Young Adult Fiction in 2002.
