Summary
  • This item would have probably been issued to attendees at the farewell to Lady Bowen, 19 February 1879. It carries the text of a song, with words by Marcus Clarke and set to music by Alfred Plumpton.
Biography
  • Roma Diamantina Bowen was born the daughter of Count Candiano di Roma. She married George Ferguson Bowen in 1856. She died in 1893.
Notes
  • Text of the programme is as follows: Not ours the stream of fair Peneus flowing, / Not ours the glittering sheen of Baiae's bay; / Not ours the darkling groves of Tempe, growing / Where Pelion's shadow cools the burning day. / Lady, we cannot point to stream or mountain / as witness of our claim to storied praise; / No Oread haunts the glen, no Nymph the fountain, / No goddess gleams in our untrodden ways. / Yet think not with the vanished gods have vanished / Quite all the candour and the grace of earth; / Beauty and Truth have not been wholly banished, / But smile as brightly now as at thy birth. / Ah Yes! withdrawn from suffering and from sorrow, / Immortally they smile on mortal's pain; / Dark is to-day but in a brighter morrow / They'll kiss the eyelids of their child again. / Farwell! dear Lady, let a people's blessing / Speed thee wherever Fate allots thy part; / Still ever standing staunch to those who need thee, / Still ever bearing a courageous heart! / May each bright morn of Austral Day remind thee; / And when in days to be, the gentle hand / Of the great Friend shall beckon, may he find thee / Calm as the Night in thine own lovely land.
