  • Professor Carey speaks of the research he pioneered in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology; the development of ultrasonic scanning; the introduction of the contraceptive pill in 1961 and research into side effects and the management of menopausal symptoms. He also speaks of his studies and training.
Biography
  • Harvey Carey, medical researcher and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of New South Wales, 1964-1984 was born in Whangarei, New Zealand in 1917 and, after establishing the School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of New South Wales in 1963, he achieved world renown for his work in obstetrics and gynaecology during the 1960s and 1970s. He produced contraceptives tailored to the needs of individual women according to their physical requirements and also did pioneer work on the fertility drug. He developed the "Roman Catholic pill" which did not suppress ovulation but rather regulated to a particular time in the ovulation cycle.
