  11. Gibson
    List
    Public

    Possible connections of Phoebe and Ann Gibson, who married Donald and Gregor McInnes.

    An Andrew and Annie Gibson arrived as assisted migrants on the "Charlotte Jane" in 1848 according to NSW Assisted Immigrant records. Their native place was Blick (sic) - Blaich on Loch Eil, Lochaber near Fort William, Scotland. Their eldest son Allan (25) was from Achphuble (Achaphubuil), and the other children Anne (23), Euphemia (21) [Probably the Gaelic name Oighrig], John (19), Annie (sic - Anne and Annie almost certainly had different Gaelic names - such as Anna, Ùna or Anabla], Hugh (13) and Jessie (11) were all from Duisky, Kilmallie. Blaich and Duisky are in the same locality on Loch Eil and Achaphubuil is on the same shore nearby across Loch Linne from Fort William and Corpach, at the junction of the two lochs.

    About early 1853, an Andrew Gibson from Goulburn was reported ( Ross, Lachlan [1915] From Rossville to the Victorian Goldfields in 1852 http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/165137 Pg. 84) as being in the Ovens gold fields, where his daughters nursed an ill Charles McInnes (my great great uncle). Now, two sisters, Anne http://mcinnes-family-history.com/individual.php?pid=I2521&ged=McInnes.GED&tab=0 and Emily (Phoebe) Gibson http://mcinnes-family-history.com/individual.php?pid=I2522&ged=McInnes.GED&tab=0 had married Charles' brothers Gregor and Donald respectively in May and October 1852 in Goulburn. These match the ages, within a year or so, of the immigrants Anne and Euphemia. Jessie Gibson married John Henry Conness and lived at "Blaich Appin", Bowna. Donald and Phoebe lived not far away at Wagra, and Phoebe is buried at Bowna (Donald is buried at Lake Cargelligo). This collection is to confirm or refute those connections.

    List

    Heaton family from "Frogmore", Orchard Hills, Penrith, NSW.

    Descendents of:

    Patrick, son of Edward and Bridget (née Bermingham), b. 1815 arr. 1833? d. 1874 wife Ann d. 1875;
    Valentine, son of Edward* and Bridget b. 1833 arr. 1850 in the "Emily", d. 1918 wife Anne d. 1932;
    Richard, son of Michael and Mary, b. 1838 arr. 1853 in the "Malvina Vidal" d. 1902 wife Martha d. 1922;
    Lawrence/ Laurence, son of Joseph and Rose b. 1856 arr. 1886 d. 1928 wife Ellen d. 1923;
    David (father of John - aka Patrick John and John Patrick of Millers Forrest) son of Peter b. 1832 arr. aft. 1874 d.? wife Anne née Houghran d.?.

    All of "Frogmore" in the Orchard Hills district near Penrith. Although they may have moved elsewhere (eg. Valentine to Singleton, Lawrence to Orange), obituaries refer to Frogmore as being their original home location. It seems to have been a landing point for new migrants from the family.
    * Valentine's obituary says that he is brother to Patrick, but his death certificate says that his father is Patrick not Edward. That is, this may be in error, or he may be a cousin, not a brother.

    Also cousins through the Bermingham family - Children of James Fogarty and Mary Bermingham b. 1828 d. 1896 Kilpatrick.

    Correspondence as part of a feud between John McDonell of Tyrl Tyrl, Ranald McDonell of Cotta Walla (near Roslyn, NSW) and Alexander McDonell of Gary Hill, near Grant's Flat, Middle Arm, NSW on one part, and Duncan Fitztempest (D.F.) Cameron of Tyrl Tyrl (between Taralga and Laggan, NSW) on the other.

    The combatants show a deep knowledge of Gaelic culture and history, and this is a rare example of public display of the detail of what Highland Scots in Australia knew and thought of their culture (as opposed to Highland Society reports which just described sports and other events). Despite claims of superiority, both sides reveal that they struggle with literacy in their native Gaelic. Their literacy in the "foreign" language of English is clearly at a high level, with Duncan having worked as a tutor.

    Donald McInnes (1836-1878) of Clifton (near Picton, NSW) in relation to his land at Strathaird, near Taralga, NSW. Though not related to the Middle Arm McInneses, Donald was married to Mary Ann, daughter of Captain Lachlan McAlister of Clifton and Strathaird, who in turn was related to Arabella McInnes née Nicholson through the McLeods of Gesto (see seperate list), Skye. Donald retained land at Strathaird after his father-in-law had lost this estate and died (1855). His mother-in-law was also an unrelated (?) McInnes, and his sister-in-law, Ann Janet MacAlister was married to John Cunningham Henderson of "Rosslyn", Roslyn, NSW (later owned by the also unrelated "Rosslyn" McInnes family - see seperate list).

    McInnes family residing at "Rosslyn", NSW and also "Syrdale" (later at Kingsdale), Woodhouselee, and "Ferndale" Roslyn (as Turner family wife nee McInnes). Not related to the McInnes family of Middle Arm, but closely associated with that family from the voyage to Australia (both travelled on the "George Fyfe" in 1839 ) despite the former being from Skye and the latter from Moidart. Then both families worked for Captain Lachlan MacAlister at Strathaird, Taralga, and later both families held property near Roslyn-Woodhouselee-Middle Arm. The similarity of first names, the same surname and the nearby locations create constant ambiguity and confusion when searching in Trove for one or the other family!
