OBITUARY.
The death occurred at Drayton last
week of Mr. Cornelius Woods, one of
the old pioneers at the ripe age of
82 years. Despite eye trouble which
eventually caused him to lose his sight,
he enjoyed comparatively good health
until six weeks ago, when he was com
pelled to keep to his bed. He peace
fully breathed his Iast in his old home
in Drayton, where he had resided for
nearly 50 years. The Iate Mr. Woods
was retiring in disposition; well liked
by young and old, his name was a
household word when Drayton was in
its palmy days. He was born in Cappa
White, County Tipperary, Ireland, in
the year 1838, and came to Queensland
in the ship "Wonata," in 1863, first
settling in Ipswich but Iater on remov
ing to the then promising township of
Drayton. In Ipswich in 1855 he mar
ried Miss Bridget Dwyer, an incom
parable helpmate, who brightened his
life until her decease 41 years later.
He is survived by one son, John, who
is manager of the local branch of the
Government Savings Bank, and three
daughters, Sisters Mary Baptist and
Sister Mary Joan, both Sisters of Mercy
at Rockhampton, and Mary, who was
the companion of his later years. De
ceased was a devout Catholic. He re
ceived the last Sacraments of the
Church at the hands of the Rev.
Father O'Connell, and Rev. Father
Kremin conducted the burial service.
