This school was commenced on 10 June 1926 in the old rectory (known as Glebe House) of the Church of St John the Baptist in Canberra by Sisters of the Anglican order, The Community of the Sisters of the Church, at the request of Bishop Radford. Initial funding was provided by a mortgage on St Gabriel's Church of England School for Girls', Waverley, in Sydney. A mock-Tudor building was erected in several stages on a site in Melbourne Avenue, in the suburb variously known as Blandfordia, Redhill and now Deakin, ACT. The Sisters were unable to retain the school during the Great Depression and left the school at the end of 1932. Archdeacon Robertson and a group of parents took over the school from the sisters and it was renamed Canberra Church of England Girls' Grammar School, as the Sisters refused permission to retain the St Gabriel's name, badge, school colours or uniform. In 2000 the name of the school was changed to Canberra Girls' Grammar School and in 2012 the apostrophe was dropped from the School's name.
