The research question I have chosen is “How did Cathy Freeman display her Aboriginality to the world?” The archive collection I have chosen for my main research is, ‘The Canberra times’ digitised newspapers from the decade of 1990-1999. The question I have chosen aims to identify how Cathy Freeman, a proud Aboriginal women showed the world her culture and ideas surrounding the Aboriginal nation. My main focus is on Cathy Freeman displaying both the Aboriginal and Australian flag, at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games between the years of 1994 and 2000. I have chosen a range of primary sources that include both newspaper articles from the time as well as photographic evidence. The sources I have chosen from my main archive collection ‘The Canberra Times’, shows a range of both positive and negative viewpoints in regards to Cathy Freeman displaying the Aboriginal Flag to the world during the Games. Some positive viewpoints were displayed in source number two in the Trove list. This source is a newspaper article titled ‘Stand tall, Cathy Freeman!’ To counteract this some negative viewpoints were displayed in source number three in the Trove list. Source number three is also a newspaper article, titled ‘‘Freeman to people: have a go Inspiration from Games win, but flurry over flag’. Along with adding a negative viewpoint, this article also adds quotes from Cathy herself stating her motives for carrying and presenting both flags to the world. By having the comparison between both negative and positive viewpoints, we can see that Australian Parliamentary members, as well as the Australian public, hold controversial opinions regarding Cathy Freeman displaying her Aboriginality alongside her Australian culture and pride. This is also significant because, both positive and negative views were published on the idea of presenting the Aboriginal flag to the world. This shows that many Australians were perhaps still in denial of their countries Indigenous heritage. Furthermore, by Cathy Freeman displaying the Aboriginal flag at the Commonwealth and Olympic games, the idea of the Aboriginal nation and importance of the Aboriginal flag is displayed to the world. Overall I think this was a very interesting research question to explore and a topic that to some degree remains controversial in Australia today.
