This list accompanies David Coombe's research journal which identifies for the first time a painting of this building in July 1838 by Frederick Robert Nixon (1817–1860). This makes it one of South Australia's earliest colonial paintings. The list items are generally in chronological order.

  6. Expedition to S.E. South Australia, April-May 1844
    List
    Public

This list links resources relating to Governor Grey's expedition to the south-east of South Australia in April and May 1844. It identifies definitively the purpose of the map (SLSA BRG 42/119/8) as being of this expedition - showing the routes taken, localities visited and places named. It also identifies expedition member Thomas Burr (Deputy Surveyor General) as the creator of the map.
This list includes the map, relevant newspaper articles, Thomas Burr's journal of the expedition, and works by accompanying artist George French Angas. Angas recorded many scenes in sketchbook(s), some dated by himself, and this list also matches these where possible with Burr's chronology. Scenes are dated in yyyy-mm-dd format.

  7. Faking It: Sturt's Overland Expedition leaving Adelaide, 10th August 1844
    List
    Public

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) holds two watercolours showing a near identical scene and titled "Sturt's Overland Expedition leaving Adelaide 10th August, 1844". Both are attributed to the artist Samuel Thomas Gill. They have accession numbers AGSA 0.1128 and AGSA 0.1522. I argue that the latter is a fake.

Items in the list tend to follow the order of my article (list item 1).

  9. George Barron Goodman: Revealing the True Identity of Australia’s First Professional Photographer
    List
    Public

George Goodman was Australia's first professional photographer. His birth date was unknown. But his death was also a puzzle. This Trove list accompanies my article uncovering the true identity of G.B. Goodman. It includes significant events in his timeline. The list also includes references to other works treating Goodman's biography. Significant dates follow in yyyy-mm-dd format.

1842-11-04 George Goodman and Sarah Polack arrive in Sydney from London aboard "Eden".
1843-01-04 George Goodman and Sarah Polack marry at Sydney Synagogue.
    1844-06-21 Daughter Hannah born, Sydney.
1847-06-xx Daughter Minna Rosa born, Sydney.
1847-06-09 Goodman sells his daguerreotype business to brother-in-law Isaac Polack.
1850-03-06 Violent assault on G.B. Goodman by his father-in-law Abraham Polack. Trigger being proposed return to England. It is possible the Goodmans left Sydney after this, as they are next noticed leaving Melbourne.
1851-06-02 George Goodman dies in Paris, France (according to report).
1851-10-18 Sydney newspaper prints notice of George Goodman's death.
1851-12-18 Sarah Goodman marries Claude Grant Arnold in Sydney.

  10. KELLY, Alexander Charles (1811–1877) - 1840s emigration related work
    List
    Public

    Type: Biographical timeline
Ambition: Ideally I'd like to make this a "global" list in an enhanced Trove.
Scope and Purpose: This list contains early biographical detail for Alexander Charles Kelly - surgeon, promoter of migration from Scotland to South Australia, vigneron, winemaker at Morphett Vale (Tintara vineyard) and amateur artist. It focuses on his early emigration related activities in the 1840s and not on his winemaking. Kelly was surgeon superintendant on several migrant ships. This list was used partly to determine if there was more than one Dr Kelly at the time. It identifies another Dr. Kelly.

CONCLUSION: There was another Dr Kelly as follows:
1838-11-16 Emigrant ship "Rajasthan" arrives Adelaide with "James B. Kelly and wife" cabin passengers.
1838-12-08 "Dr Kelly" selling powders and medical kits imported on migrant ship "Rajasthan".
1839-09-22 KELLY James Joseph died aged 32; Holy Trinity register; probably buried West Tce Cemetery.
1840-05-02 Eliza, widow of the late J. B. Kelly, Esq., Surgeon, remarried Trinity Church.

    KELLY, Alexander Charles:
1839-11-22 "A. C. Kelly, Esq., surgeon superintendent" departs Liverpool on emigrant ship "Baboo".
1840-03-10 Kelly arrives Adelaide on "Baboo" migrant ship from Liverpool.
1840-04-14 MR ALEX. C. KELLY, M. D. commences medical practice.
    1843-01-25 A.C. Kelly selects 80 acres, section 634.
1846-02-09 "Dr Kelly" departs for London aboard "John Heyes". Also aboard "A. Hardy and son" (future wine connection?).
    1846-06-28 "John Heyes" arrives London.
    1846-11-05 "Princess Royal" departs London
1847-03-16 "Dr Kelly, surgeon superintendent" arrives Adelaide on migrant ship "Princess Royal".
    1847-06-17 "Lady McNaughton" departs London
1847-10-13 A. C. Kelly, Surgeon Superintendent and (his mother) Mrs Kelly arrive Adelaide on migrant ship "Lady McNaughton" from London
1854-11-01 Kelly married Annie Frances WORTHINGTON.
    1877-10-09 Kelly died.

    S. T. Gill, an historical controversy and an investigation.

A controversy is brewing in historical circles over the true identity of Australian colonial artist Samuel Thomas GILL (1818 – 1880). Recently it has overflowed into mainstream media. The controversy coincides with the exhibition "Australian Sketchbook: Colonial Life and the Art of S.T. Gill." It impacts on several interests of mine: colonial newspapers, NLA’s Trove and tracing elusive 19th century characters. What can we find?

  22. Thatched House, North Terrace, Adelaide (Acre 17)
    List
    Public

This thatched building on Adelaide's acre 17 was occupied from 1849 by recently arrived surgeon Dr. James Phillips. It's generally remembered as Phillips' building. But what was it earlier when artist S.T. Gill painted it in 1845?

Acre 17 was first purchased by C.G. Everard and was still owned by Everard family when in a dilapidated condition. To what use was Everard's thatched building being put in 1845?

These are working notes and your corrections / additions are welcome.
