the island ordered the vessel into quarantine
in consequence of there being measles on board

captain further reports the death of two single
girls from heat apoplexy in the Gulf of Aden,
and four children and ono infant from measles.

The steamer Birksgate, in Messrs. Burns, Phip's line,
yesterday arrived m port, and berthed at the company*»
wharf. Captain C. E. Saunders reports, of the round trip:
-Left Sydney at lO.30. p.m.on March 30 Newcastle at noon
on the 31st, Noumea at 2 p m. on April 6, Aneityum at 6
a.m. on the 8th, Suva at 5 am on the l2th, Lvuka at 4.30
a.m. on the 13th. Left Suva at 3.30 p m. on April 13
Proceeded to banana ports and loaded bananas, Cleared
out from the Group for Sydney at 2 p m on April 15, and
arrived in Watson's Bay at « a in* on Al ni i!2. For 4S hour«
after leaving Newcastle experiened a strong S.E. to S W.
gale with a high sea and heavy east south-east swell
causing the ship to labour heavily and ship quantities of
water; thence to Noumea moderate to fresh E.N.E. winds
and high easily swell with fine weather. From Noumna
to Aneityum had a moderate easterly gale with high sea
and squally weather, Aneityum to Suva fresh easterly gale
with heavy sea, the vessel shipping large quantities of
water, causing much damage to deck fittings. On approach«
ing the Fiji group experienced sitting N.E winds with
wet weather. Among the islands had moderate variable
winds and wet weather. From Suva to Sydney light vary
able winds and wet weather and moderate S.E to N, winds
with fine weather. On nearng the coast experienced a
fresh S.S.E. to S.W. gale with high seas and squally

weather.
