  1. A Northern Pilgrimage
    List
    Public

A series of articles in the Brisbane Courier published in 1893-1894 on the journey from Brisbane to Townsville. The articles were repeated in The Queenslander with additional illustrations. For that reason, I include articles from both newspapers in my list, even though they are mostly duplicates.

  4. Brisbane Suburbs
    List
    Public

A series of articles about Brisbane suburbs that appeared in the Brisbane Courier in 1930-1931 on Saturdays.

Although there is no series title or author identified, there is a consistent pattern to these articles in terms of subject matter, position within the newspaper, length and style that suggests it is intended as a series of articles.

  5. Brisbanes Historic Churches
    List
    Public

A series of 16 articles in the Brisbane Courier 1904 - 1905 on the historic churches of Brisbane. The early articles in the series were published on a regular fortnightly timetable but the later articles were published less frequently. One article on Lutheran churches was split over two weeks (XII and XIII in the series)

Unfortunately the digitisation of the articles has not always been completely successful in terms of isolating the article (that is, the original article may appear as multiple Trove articles, some of which may contain extraneous material from other original articles). You might find looking at the whole page may be helpful in understanding how to put the pieces together.

Contact me for corrections/updates at kerry.raymond@gmail.com but note that inclusion in this list depends on being part of the newspaper series of that name. This list is not intended to capture information on the historic churches of Brisbane more generally.

[Note, the list should be called Brisbane's Historic Churches, but there is currently a bug in Trove that makes a list name with an apostrophe invisible, so I will fix the name when the bug is fixed]

  6. Brisbanes Historic Homes
    List
    Public

This list is to provide access to a series of articles under the title "Brisbane's Historic Homes" that appeared in "The Queenslander" newspaper through 1930-1932. The series was written by Florence Eliza Lord (a journalist). There appear to be over 140 articles in the series. The use of the roman numbering in the list below reflects that of the original article (except where noted). I am also including some additional material that is related to the series (letters from readers etc).

Unfortunately the digitisation of the articles has not always been completely successful in terms of isolating the article (that is, the original article may appear as multiple Trove articles, some of which may contain extraneous material from other original articles). You might find looking at the whole page may be helpful in understanding how to put the pieces together.

  8. Caravanning Through Queensland
    List
    Public

A series of articles in The Queensland published from 1928 to 1935. The title of the series changes over time, but, as (most of) the articles are numbered, it is clear it is one continuing series. Typically each issue had an article with accompanying photographs later in the issue, hence 2 entries in the list below for each issue.

Due to the vagaries of digitisation, in some issues, there are more than 2 entries required to capture all of the content. Some of the digitisation of the photos is quite poor making the captions difficult to read, making it difficult to know which photos as part of the article.

  9. Chapel Hill cemetery, Brisbane
    List
    Public

Chapel Hill cemetery is located on the north-east corner of Moggill Road and Chapel Hill Road, Chapel Hill, Brisbane. The district and the cemetery were once known as Indooroopilly prior to the creation of the suburb of Chapel Hill. The cemetery is at the rear of a church, originally a Primitive Methodist church, now a Uniting Church. However, it is a private cemetery rather than one belonging to the church.

The items below are mostly death notices, funeral notices and/or obituaries for people buried in the cemetery (sometimes there is more than one item per person), but there are a few articles dealing with or mentioning the cemetery itself. The newspaper items are in chronological order

  10. Chapel Hill Uniting Church, Brisbane
    List
    Public

The Chapel Hill Uniting Church is located on the north-east corner of Moggill Road and Chapel Hill Road in the suburb of Chapel Hill in Brisbane.

This church was originally the Primitive Methodist church at Indooroopilly (which then referred to a much larger area than it does today). Being located at the top of a hill, the church gave the name Chapel Hill to that area, and ultimately to the suburb that exists today (Indooroopilly now being an adjacent suburb).

The Primitive Methodist Church was later a Methodist Church and then a Uniting Church (a merger of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches).

  17. Nomenclature of Queensland
    List
    Public

A series of 324 articles in the Brisbane "Courier Mail" from 1935-1936 on the origins of names of over 1400 Queensland towns/places, plus related letters to the editor augmenting or disputing the origins of the place name.

Each article covers a number of names working slowly through in alphabetic order. However, where the name has a geographic element like Mount XXXX, then it may be listed under Mount or XXXX (so try them all). Similarly if a name has been given to multiple related places (e.g. a town, a river, a mountain), it may be listed only once but its use for multiple features is often noted.

I have listed the placenames included in each article in the note below (the pink area); click through to the original article to learn the origins of the place name.
