TOMBSTONE BLESSING
The Blessing and unveiling of three
Tombstones was held on Yorke Island
on 13th July. These were:
The late Ingvalie Billy. Ethen[?] Doreen
Billy, and John Gibson Billy.
Visitors from Thursday Island, Darnley,
Yam and Sue Island attended.
Mr. & Mrs. Bert Reconberg[?] and Emmanuel
Billy travelled from Weipa while Mrs.
Bowie travelled from Cowal Creek.
Famlies and friends gathered at the
church before proceeding to the grave
side.
Mr. Edward Mosby, Mr. John Hayes, Princi-
pal of the Yorke Is. school and Mr.
Jeff Tacey[?], DAIA Representative cut the
ribbons on the tombstones.
Following the unveiling, families
dence for the feasting.
Mr. G. Lui (Snr) Mr. J. Mosby, Mr. E. Mosby
and Mr. B. Reconberg [?] spoke during the
feasting.
Dancing teams led by Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Lowatta, Mrs. L. Nai and Mr. T. Harry com-cyind Mr Horiy coot-
menced dancing at 9p.m. and continued
until 8a.m. the following day.
Dancing and feasting continued through
out the weekend.
All who attended the celebrations must
thank the people who worked many long
hours preparing delicious food and
spent many late nights perfecting the
island dancing.

The blessing and unveiling of the tombstone of the late Elisa Nai was heId a
lorke Island on 15th. August and was attended by a number of visitors from[?]

heavy seas prevented many coming from the neighbouring islands.
Over 300 people gathered at the church before proceeding to the graveside.
Mr. J.Mosby acted as chairman [?].
The cutting of the ribbon was performed by the Department's representative
Hayes while Canon Mosby, Fr. L.Warrla, and Fr. B.Warrla officiated with pra[yer]
and blessing.
Gifts and donations of approx. $1,000 were handed to the Mothers Union.

of England at present studying
at the National University of
Canberra, is visiting theTorres
Strait.. He will carry out a
survey of Island custom and
beliefs to check the advance-
ment made in the last 50 years.
In 1890 [sic] and[sic] expedition from
the Cambridge University carried
out a survey of the Torres
Strait , and Mr Beckett will
compare notes in order to com-
plete his thesis.

He will stay at least 12 months
and visit all the surrounding
Islands, commenclng at Murray
Island which he feels will pro-
vide a rich field for study.
