Gundagai Bakery.

German immigrant, baker, confectioner, and war veteran William Bibo moved to Gundagai and opened a small bakery in 1864. It’s believed William’s wealth came from his work making his own range of confectionery and selling it to the surrounding NSW towns.

While he was born in the German town of Eltville, he became a beloved local of Gundagai, calling the town home for nearly half a century.

He served as Mayor of the town multiple times. He also served as President of the local hospital for over 20 years and on the hospital committee for 30 years.

His obituary in the Gundagai Times from 1910 shows what a beloved figure he was. He was even referred to as ‘the most remarkable old man in the district.’
