This is the Verneuil flame process for sapphire and ruby production. The actual temperature used is not 8000 (presumably °F)(=4427°C) but the melting point of alumina at about 2000°C (3632°F). Too much higher may just vaporise the colouring agents (chromic or iron oxides)
