Like other members of the King family Robert kept a sketchbook of drawings and watercolours. His sketch books, held in the Mitchell Library, contain drawings of Australian fish and crustacea as well as portraits and landscapes.

sketcher and Church of England clergyman, fourth son of Phillip Parker King and Harriet, nee Lethbridge, was educated at The King’s School, Parramatta, New South Wales, then at Cambridge. He returned to Sydney in 1847 and worked in several parishes before being appointed principal of Moore Theological College in 1868. Managing the college by himself put a severe strain on King’s health and he returned to parish work in 1878. King’s sketchbooks (ML) include three filled with drawings of Australian fish and one of crustacea, the latter also containing an untitled ink panoramic view dated 9 July 1852. Pencil and sepia watercolour views dating from 1872 to 1877 in another sketchbook often include a church, e.g. St Thomas’ Church, Sackville Reach (20 May 1872) and Burrowang (17 [April?] 1877). His commonplace book includes both English and colonial landscape sketches, many featuring the ubiquitous church, and a large number of profile portraits, some in the form of silhouettes, many of clergymen or of King’s fellow students at Cambridge. Colonial subjects include members of the King, Lethbridge and Macarthur families. He also contributed to the sketchbooks of his brother Charles and sister Elizabeth
