I have been an autonomic neurobiologist working in sympathetic ganglia, sympathetic neurovascular transmission and the consequences of injury of peripheral nerves and spinal cord for the sympathetic and sensory systems for >40 years. I have had long collaborations with Wilfrid Jänig of the Universität Kiel in Germany and James Brock at the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (now Neuroscience Research Australia) in Sydney. I have also been involved with the research community in a number of roles, including many committees of the National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia (1985-2008) and as President of the Australian Neuroscience Society (1996-7) and of the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Neuroscience Societies (1998), Chair of the International Brain Research Organization Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (1999-2001) and member of the Council of the Australian Academy of Science (of which I was elected a Fellow in 1997). I served as Executive Head of Research Management at the NHMRC (1999-2001) and as Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) of the University of New South Wales (2001-4). My lab is now closed but I retain an interest in synaptic transmission in autonomic ganglia, sympathetic neurotransmission to peripheral target organs, neuroimmune responses, and the effects of nerve and spinal cord injury.
