Thomas Cherry was Professor of Mathematics 1929-1952 and Professor of Applied Mathematics 1952-1963 at the University of Melbourne. Supervised the installation and operations of the CSIRAC computer from 1956.

Born Melbourne, 21 May 1898. Died Melbourne, 21 November 1966. Kt 1965. Educated Universities of Melbourne (BA hons 1918) and Cambridge (BA 1922, PhD 1924, ScD 1950). Australian Flying Corps 1918; Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge 1923-28; professor of mathematics, pure and mixed, University of Melbourne 1929-52, professor of applied mathematics 1952-63. Lyle medal, Australian National Research Council 1951. Foundation Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1954, Fellow, Royal Society 1954. President, Mathematics Association of Victoria 1929-34, 1946-48; foundation president, Australian Mathematical Society 1956-58; foundation president, Victorian Computer Society 1961-63; president, Australian Academy of Science 1961-64.

Thomas Macfarland Cherry was born in 1898 and educated at the University of Melbourne and Cambridge University. In 1924 he was appointed temporary Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics at Manchester University and in 1927 he deputised for C.G. Darwin at the University of Edinburgh. From 1925 Cherry also delivered a series of advanced lectures in Mathematics at Cambridge. In 1929 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Melbourne where he remained until his retirement in 1963.
