Jack O'Hagan was a highly prolific songwriter who wrote many nostalgic songs about Australia. He began his musical career as a "song-plugger" at Allan's music store in Melbourne, where he played sheet music on the piano for customers. With the advent of radio he worked as a broadcaster on Melbourne's 3LO and other stations. He established his reputation as a songwriter and composer using broadcasting and recording as a means for promoting his own compositions, of which more than 130 were published in his 30-year career. O'Hagan also wrote numerous scores and songs for use with silent films. In Dreamy Araby, for example, was used as the theme of the Rudolph Valentino hit The Sheik (1922). He also wrote much dance music and music for stage shows. O'Hagan began to write songs in about 1916 and released his first song, Oh, Those Honolulu Girls in 1918. In 1921, he wrote Australia's best known place-name song, Along the Road to Gundagai. He had never visited the town, claiming instead to have chosen it arbitrarily from a map. Peter Dawson recorded the song the following year, and its fame magnified when it was used as the theme music for the long-running radio show Dad and Dave. He capitalised on the public's sentimental attraction to his homely, rustic imagery and wrote two more songs on Gundagai, including Where the Dog Sits on the Tuckerbox and When a Boy from Alabama Meets a Girl from Gundagai, and other places such as Yackandandah, the Blue Mountains, and the Murray River. His quirky Things is Crook in Tallarook (1952) and I'm off To Woop Woop also enjoyed local popularity. O'Hagan also had great commercial success in writing about national heroes such as Kingsford Smith, Bradman, and Ginger Meggs, and patriotic war time songs. The popularity of O'Hagan's works stemmed not only from his engagement with local themes, but also from his use of emerging popular styles and aptitude for writing memorable tunes. He worked closely with visiting American jazz pianist and saxophonist Tom Swift during the 1920s, composing, touring, and recording with Swift's bands. In the 1930s, F.W. Thring recorded a sound film of O'Hagan performing his own compositions in Thring's early "talkie" studio. He also wrote music for numerous revues and pantomimes. Like many popular songwriters of his era, O'Hagan used various pseudonyms, which were often synthesised from the names of his family and friends. The name Pamela Terese, for example, was drawn from the Christian names of his eldest daughter. By the early 1960s, O'Hagan's style and approach had become outmoded, but he continued to compose until the early 1980s.
