    Summary: The inspiration to paint came to Albert Namatjira at the Hermannsburg Mission in 1934, when he saw an exhibition of watercolours done in the district by Rex Battarbee and John Gardiner. He informed Pastor Albrecht of his desire, and he offered to help him. When Mr Battarbee returned to the district two years later, Albert offered to be camel boy for him, in return for lessons in painting. They were away for two months, during which he received the only lessons he ever had. He was then 34, had been married for years, and had several children. He was already a craftsman in iron and wood, a good worker, and ambitious to improve his position; and his adoption of the Christian faith had brought a steadiness into his life which enabled him to pursue a definite aim. His first exhibition was held in Melbourne in 1938, when Mr WH Gill gave him his first chance to prove his worth to the art world. The exhibition was a great success, and since that time, exhibitions of his paintings have been held in all the State Capitals, and Alice Springs. Some years, he has received as much as 2,000 pounds for his paintings. Inspired by his example, several other members of the Aranda tribe have taken up painting, including his own son, but it was several years before their work was good enough to attract attention. Of late years, members of this Hermannsburg art group have held exhibitions in several of the capital cities, sometimes in association with Namatjira. In 1953, Namatjira was one of several aborigines to be awarded the Coronation Medal, and in 1954, was one of the two Northern Territory aborigines flown from Darwin to Canberra with the official party for presentation to Her Majesty, the Queen, and the Duke of Edinburgh. Before returning to his home, he was entertained by friends and well-wishers in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and in the Tanunda district of South Australia, where he paid a tribute to the first missionaries who, nearly 80 years before, had set out from that district on the long and tedious overland journey to Central Australia, to found the mission at Hermannsburg. He also thanked the people for their long and sustained interest in the people of his tribe.

    Summary: Keith Namatjira and his relatives paint in the style of their father, Albert Namatjira. They live in a fringe camp near Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory. They sell their paintings to the passing tourists or to local art galleries. This film explores the relationship between the artists' camp and the outside world.

    Place: Mparntwe / Alice Springs (South Central NT SF53-14)

    Language: Arrernte / Aranda people (C8) (NT SG53-02);

  63. [1988]

    Summary: The story of Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira is one of extreme contrast and paradox. First Citizen: Albert Namatjira explores the great natural talent which enabled the artist to become the first to adopt painting techniques and modes of cultural expression which were in direct contrast to his own. His life is an expression of Australia's faltering response to and awareness of Aboriginal culture and the diametrically opposed values of art, law and morality. During his lifetime (1902 - 1959) he was a pivotal figure in some of the dramatic changes between black and white Australia.

    Language: Arrernte / Aranda people (C8) (NT SG53-02)Pertame people (C8) (NT SF53-14);
