Alfred Plumpton arrived in Melbourne in 1878 after touring in Asia as conductor of an opera company. He claimed to be a leading British part-song writer. In 1882 he became music critic for the Melbourne Age and Leader and contributed scholarly articles to the Victorian Review. Quickly becoming established in Melbourne's musical community, at various times he served as musical director at Presbyterian Ladies' College, and director of the choirs at St Francis's Church and St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne. His Mass in G for choir and orchestra, first performed at the Cathedral in January 1881, appears to have disappeared without trace. Some of his organ works have survived. Plumpton's other compositions include a two-act opera, I Due Studenti, of which the New Italian Opera Company gave the premiere in Melbourne in December 1887, and the cantatas Endymion (1882) and The Apotheosis of Hercules (1883). He also wrote music for topical events in Melbourne. The West Bourke Plate Galop appears to have been composed in honour of a racing event in the Victorian electoral district of West Bourke in the period 1878-1882. For a banquet in the Melbourne Town Hall in honour of Governor and Lady Bowen before their departure for Mauritius in 1879, he set Marcus Clarke's poem "Victoria's Farewell to Lady Bowen". The Victorian Jubilee Ode was composed expressly for the Metropolitan Liedertafel, Melbourne in 1887. In 1890 Plumpton conducted a season with Nellie Stewart's opera company, and was president of the Society of Musicians of Australasia from 1890 to 1891. In 1892 he left Australia permanently, returning to London with his pianist wife, Madame Tasca.
