Biographies

Raymond Marginson was appointed to the position of Vice-Principal of the University of Melbourne in 1965. In that role, he made an application in respect of a patent for an invention called the "Electrode for Human Cochlea" in 1983. The awarding of this patent was an important milestone in the development of the bionic ear (cochlear implant) which was the subject of research by a team led by Professor Graeme Clark at the university. Marginson remained in the role of Vice-Principal until his retirement in 1988.

Raymond Marginson graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne in 1946 before entering the commonwealth public service on 20 July 1948.

Born in 1923, Ray Marginson was educated at Melbourne High School and the University of Melbourne where he graduated Bachelor of Commerce in 1946. From 1945 to 1950, Marginson worked for the Commonwealth Public Service Department of Transport and PMG Department from 1950 to 1965. In 1966 Ray Marginson was appointed Vice-Principal of the University of Melbourne. In this capacity he was responsible for advising and taking executive action in the areas of financial policy, accounting systems and budgets, control of building, maintenance grounds and property. From 1982 he was Chairman of the Melbourne Board of Works. Marginson has subsequently been a tireless member of numerous public organisations including President of the Museum of Victoria, Director of Geotrack International, Vice-Chairman of the M.T.C. and member of the Howard Florey Institute. He was the principal founder and chairman of the Victorian Jazz Archive Inc. Ray Marginson retired as Vice-Principal in 1988.
