Olive Pink was a botanical artist and anthropologist who campaigned for the rights of Aboriginal people. She was one of few women anthropologists working in a male dominated field in the 1930s and 1940s. Pink positioned herself as an expert on Aboriginal people and campaigned from this basis in her criticism of government officials, missionaries and pastoralists.

Educated in art at Hobart Technical College. Pink worked at the Public Works Department and later the Railways Commission of New South Wales. She studied anthropology at Sydney University with the Workers' Educational Association and became secretary to the Anthropological Society of NSW. In 1926 & 1927 she travelled to Ooldea on the Transcontinental Line, SA. There she created many of her early drawings of desert flora.

Pink spent much time in the Northern Territory, living first with Arrernte and Warlpiri people and settling eventually in Alice Springs. She was a prolific correspondent, writing many letters to government departments and the press, particularly to represent her beliefs about Aboriginal people and her views on their better treatment by the government. Historian Julie Marcus suggests that Pink eventually lost faith in the potential of Anthropology to assist Aboriginal people, and abandoned the discipline later in life.

In 1955 she applied for the reservation of an area of land on the eastern bank of the Todd River as a flora reserve. In 1956 the Australian Arid Regions Flora Reserve of 20 hectares was gazetted. Pink and her gardener Johnny Jambijimba Yannarilyi developed the garden, where Pink lived until her death. The garden was then renamed the Olive Pink Flora Reserve, and now contains over 300 of Central Australia's plant species.

Pink was an artist with training at the Hobart Technical College and the Julian Ashton School, Sydney. Working from a base in the Northern Territory, she was an Aboriginal-rights activist, teacher, anthropologist and gardener. Her wild flower paintings were displayed in her home outside of Alice Springs

Artist, Aboriginal-rights activist, anthropologist and gardener, studied art at the Hobart Technical School with sculptor Benjamin Sheppard ( ADB 11) before joining the staff as a teacher in 1909. Then gave private art lessons in Perth, moved to Sydney and studied at the Julian Ashton art school under Adrian Feint , also teaching in private girls’ schools. In May 1915 she was employed as a tracer in the NSW Department of Public Works; later she painted 'excursion posters and the like’ for the NSW Government Railways and Tramways until retrenched during the Depression. In 1930 she embarked on a sketching tour of Central Australia and investigated the conditions in which Aboriginal people lived, having been inspired by a visit to Daisy Bates at Ooldea (SA) in 1926-27. This changed her life. She studied anthropology at SU from 1932, but this career came to an end c.1936 when she refused to publish research that relied on descriptions of secret rituals. Forced to leave the Walpiri in the late 1940s, she lived in a corrugated-iron hut on Gregory Terrace, for a time working as a cleaner in the court-house where she also monitored cases in which Aboriginal defendants appeared – an arrangement that 'proved uncongenial to magistrates and police alike’. So she formed a committee to obtain land for a museum. It failed and she set up a small private display of her wildflower paintings and Aboriginal artefacts at one end of her hut. Although she charged for admission, it was not ...

Studied anthropology with the Workers' Educational Association and became secretary to the Anthropological Society of New South Wales. Trips in 1926 & 1927 to Ooldea on the Transcontinental Line, SA. Many of her early drawings of desert flora were completed here. Retrenched in 1930 and moved to NT, living first with the Aboriginal people in the Tanami Desert and settling eventually in Alice Springs. In 1955 made application to the Assistant Administrator for reservation of an area of land on the eastern bank of the Todd as a flora reserve.
