Biographies

Dr Tehei is the head of the Targeted Nano Therapies (TNT) theme at CMRP where he leads new advances dose enhanced and image guided nanoparticle research with a goal to ultimately translate the research to clinical practise. He is member of the leadership group of the theme Diagnostics and Therapeutics at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute. He is editorial board member of Scientific reports. Tehei designed the experimental and ethics projects to investigate the in vitro and in-vivo radiosensitivities of 9L gliosarcomas treated with nanoparticles, drugs and radiation at the Prince of Wales hospital and the Australian synchrotron. On the 29 October 2002, he was awarded, with the highest distinction, a Ph.D. in Physics (Sciences and Structures of Materials) from the University Joseph Fourier Grenoble, France. He investigated the structure-dynamics-function relationships of biological systems (cells, proteins, pegylated proteins, ribosomes and lipids), polymers and nanoparticles. His postdoctoral period (2003–2004) in New Zealand fostered Tehei’s capacity for high quality research in different biomedical/nanotechnology fields. He investigated the enzymatic properties of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Later, he investigated the interaction between the DHFR and the Methotrexate (MTX-cancer drug analogue of the folate acid). The latter work allows Tehei to better understand the interaction between the DHFR and the MTX, and therefore to optimize the chemo-radiation therapy approaches and theranostic designs. Tehei's DHFR work combined with his work on the medical beam lines at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (France) and the Australian Synchrotron led to his interest in human health applications of his work and inspired him to develop an independent research program on the effects of radiation, drugs and nanoparticles on various cell types and rodents.
