    Summary: Molly Mallett; lived on Truwana / Cape Barren Island, Tasmania; her mother made dresses from hessian bags dyed green; before electricity was supplied by diesel generators, lighting was by candles, kerosoene lamps or 'fat lights' (mutton-bird fat in a tin with a wick); the islanders caught crayfish, occasionally ate limpets, seldom fished for abalone; Molly Mallett remembered that the islanders gathered mushrooms and shared meat when livestock were killed; salted mutton birds were eaten all year; her family had to use drinking water from a natural spring 3 kilometres from home; her mother washed at the spring once a week; water was broght home in old kerosene tins; at the age of 14, Molly Mallett left Cape Barren Island and moved with her family to Lady Barron on Flinders Island; on Flinders Island she worked in a fish canning factory; a year later she and her the family left for Launceston where she found work at Coats Paton's Woolen Mills
