Lionel Bull was Chief, Division of Animal Health and Nutrition, CSIR/O 1935-1954. In 1937 he conducted field trials to determine whether the myxoma virus could be used to control the rabbit plague in Australia. Forced by quarantine authorities to make his observations in unsuitable environments, away from mosquito breeding sites, he concluded in 1944 that the virus was ineffective.

Born Hawthorn, Victoria, 27 April 1889. Died Fitzroy, Victoria, 5 May 1978. CBE 1952. Educated W.T. Kendall's (q.v.) Melbourne Veterinary college (licentiate in veterinary science 1911), which was absorbed by the University of Melbourne (BVSc 1912, DVSc 1919). First assistant to the director, laboratory of bacteriology and pathology, Adelaide Hospital 1912-25, director 1925-29; lecturer in biology, University of Adelaide 1930-33; deputy chief, Division of Animal Health, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research 1934-35, chief 1935-36, chief, Division of Animal Health and Nutrition 1936-44, chief, Division of Animal Health and Production 1944-54; senior research fellow, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation 1954-68. Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1954; Mueller medal, Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science 1955; Gilruth Prize, Australian Veterinary Association 1955; ANZAAS medal 1967.
