In 1789, at Governor Phillips orders, he was captured and, before he escaped in May 1790, he learned to speak English and acquired a taste for Euopean food and alcohol. In September he was involved in the exchange at Manly between Phillip and a group of Aborigines, during which Phillip was speared. He returned to the European settlement in 1791 and a hut was built for him on presentday Bennelong Point. in December 1792 he sailed with Phillip to England and was presented to King George III.
