AN AUSTRALIAN PAINTER.

Miss Florence Fuller, whose picture 'La Glaneuse' has been accepted, by the Paris Salon this year, began her art career in Mel bourne, which city she left at the end of 1892 for South Africa, where she executed commissions for Mr. Cecil Rhodes and others. From Africa she went to England and subsequently

entered the studio of Julien, in Paris, studying under M.M. Bourgereau and Leroy. She ex hibited a pastel head in the Paris Salon for the first time in 1895. At present she is studying under M. Collin, of whose studio of 'Eleves particulieres des Champs' she has been in charge during the past winter. Miss Fuller will return to Australia at the end of the present year.

Miss F. Foixer.

In spite of her financial difficulties Spain contrives to provide a comfortable living for the toreador Senor Rafael Guerra. The reigning monarch of bullfighters, better known by his popular nickname of 'Guerrita,' has completed his arrangements for the coming season, which begins with the Easter festivities at Saragossa, in honor of the Virgin del Filar. Altogether he undertakes to appear in about 80 corridas during the year 1897,' and for each he receives an average payment of some £240. Thus his annual income, exclusive of presents, which are often of great value, reaches the respectable total of about £20,000, Clearly there are worse trades, even if the risks be taken into consideration, while, in the event of a fatal accident the popular spada of the day may reckon upon a funeral such as no crowned head or victorious general ever re | ceives in the Peninsula.
