Threadgold said he visited the hotel on Sunday. July 16, in the company of M.L. Kain. They stayed outside for about five minutes. Ihere were four other men standing there. A door was opened by defendant, and sue of them went in by the side entrance. They proceeded to the bar, and witness called for and paid for two drinks. The four men had a pint of beer %K» ? wrong to ask for drinks, on Sunday?— I was not doing wrong. I had instructions Did you have instructions to trap defendant.'— No. Inspector Davey instructed me to go to the hotel. 1 visited four hotels that morning. Witness stated that defendant remarked on opening the door:-'Sis arc too many. Inree are enough. It is not the eetting in, but the getting out. '? M.C. J. P. Kain gave similar evidence. Defendant stated than on the Sunday in question he ckaned out the bar between 9.30 and 11.30. When finished he heard some one knocking, and opened the door and saw Constable Hockeridge and two other men. Witness was asked several questions, and the men went away. at about 12.30 and had dinner. Witness had served nobody that Sunday, and had had no requests for drink. ' Sub-Inspector Edwards— Then what the two constables say is a pure concoction? \\ ltness-Yes, so far as I am concerned. -Charles Fenton, gardener, J. Coppins, market porter, and P. Yateman, bricklayers labourer, stated that they were talking together near to the hotel. They saw no one enter the premises that 'morning. Mr. Gordon, S.M., said he believed the evidence of the police, and defendant would oe fined £5 and £ 1 costs. Harriett Myers, licencee' of the Hmdmarsh HoteL Pirie street, admitted having traded on Sunday, July- 16, and was ordered to pay £7 and 15/ costs. Mr. F. V omifch appeared for defendant. peared for defendant, who pleaded cuflty Constable A Martin said on July 2L at about 11.35 pm., he was admitted by the defendant. There was a light in the parlour behind the bar. He heard footsteps hurrying from the back of the bar,' and saw lour men in the yard. Defendant was fined £5 and £1 costs. Wdliam Henry Turner, Frances Le Stage, Frederick II. Schneider, and Edwin Adams jrere each fined £2 and £1 costs for having been found on 'the /Alma Hotel premises during prohibited hours on July 21. Mr. J- H. Vaughan admitted the offences on behalf of the defendants.
