DISCUSSION OF PROSPECTS

I By NEWMARKET I

' Postponed from August 15 on account

of rain, a meeting will be held this afternoon by the Epsom Turf Club. The programme will comprise seven races, and the first will start at 2 p.m. Fields will be of fair dimensions, and, although no outstanding performers are engaged, some keen racing should be witnessed.,,

If in similar form to when he finished a promising fourth in a division of the Crimea Trial at Caulfield, Eastern

Knight should win the Three-year-old Handicap, with which racing will begin. The opposition is not strong, and probably the greatest danger will come from Lady Courteous and Ryamann. Lady Courteous did not show out in the first division of the Crimea Trial, but that was her first race for months, and she should be Improved. Ryamann scored an easy victory at Woodend towards the end of last season, and has been galloping well on the tracks. Brilliant Son was a disappointment as a two-year-old, but improvement may be expected. Deveson and Ringman are also possibilities.

Trial Division

Marie Gay has been unfortunate in some of her recent races, and, despite a rather poor performance In a division of the Highweight Handicap at Flemington, she should score in the first division of the Trial Handicap. Van was narrowly defeated by Gold Tier at Caulfield over eight and a half furlongs, and has bright prospects. Another with a chance Is Hussar, who was third to Lady Dancer and Stryman at Moonee Valley, and similarly placed in the mile handicap at Geelong. Curzola is a smart galloper. Panbula has been running poorly, but cannot be discarded in this field. Mountfield and Fouche are also likely to be

handy.

The second division should go to Dusky Native, who' led to the home turn in the second division of the Kambrook Trial at Caulfield last month. He may have most to fear from Golden Swan, who was a little unlucky to have been defeated by Flying Anton in the Welter Handicap at Bendigo last week. City Gate was second to Great Thought in the Werribee Welter Handicap, and should

benefited by Ulla distance. Silver-Beam I must be considered, and Meroo has been showing good form on the tracks.

Owa Fancied

Despite his rather indifferent display in the Bendigo Brush Steeplechase Own is selected to win the Steeplechase. In that race he had evidently not fully recovered from the effects of his run in the Lindsay Gordon Steeplechase, where

a- ?;

he hit very hard,' and had to be pulled up. A long < last- early; he made up considerable ground; at Bendigo to run fourth, and should be in better form to-day. Plilowsham was a close fourth in a similar race at Geelong, and then won the Jumpers': Flat Race at the Ballarat Miners' meeting.' 'Taciturn has had two or three races recently, and at his last start was third in the August Hurdle Race at Flemington. Stanford.- who was successful in the Hurdle Race at Bendigo and second in the Steeplechase, is a possibility, and so is Dicaeum, who was placed in both those races.

As usual the Epsom Purse appears rather open, and Free Wheel, who won nicely over 11 furlongs at Moonee valley, should be one of the hardest to defeat,. He ran fairly well in the August Handicap at Williamstown last Saturday, and has displayethstamlna in all his races. Yesterday he was second to Sadie Glass in the ¡FIovverAeld Handicap. Loyola was unlucky not to have finished closer than third to Sadie Glass and Jean Beatty in the second division of the Moonee Valley Welter Purse, and, although unplaced at the same course a few days later, should

run forward. Laudation, who was second in a similar event at Epsom recently, and Elfin Prince and La Trobe make most appeal of the others.

Plate Field

Call Bird has a heavyweight in the Epsom Plate, but did well enough in the V.R.C. Apprentices' Handicap to suggest that he should take a hand in the finish. Harry Gavin is a hardy old sprinter, who retains his form splendidly. If he re-produces his display in the Moondah Plate when third to Yultewirra and Maybe," he, should obtain a place. Blue Chequer has been working well, and has shown a liking for this course. Yesterday he missed a place in the Cave Hill Handicap, but should do better to-day. Jamberoo has been showing improvement lately, and Curly has been consistent, although she does not finish very resolutely. Opera Bag gave a fair display at his last start, and may do better' than is generally expected. Eastern Glow was unlucky in a division of the Berri-must Handicap at Moonee Valley on July 28, and, although she ran poorly in the

Truganina Handicap at Williamstown, is ' entitled to consideration.

There will be a large field in the Welter

Mile, and burr 1er positions may play an, important part. For his win at Bendigo Whcriko has incurred a penalty of 3lb., but he is much better class than his opponents, and, as he will be all the better for that race, should score. He may have most trouble, from Great. Thought and Last Court. Great Thought failed in a division of the Highweight Handicap at Moonee Valley, but Just previously won. a Welter at Werribee, and was defeated by half a "head in a similar event at Geelong. West' Court finished, well to run a dead-heat with- Shining Gold behind Nuit d'Or in a division of the Welter at Moonee Valley.' With only 5lb. above the minimum Jeldlwallah' is a possibility, and others with chances are Sanbaliat, paine Isa, Balkan "King and Dark Look.
