  2. Scenes in Chungking—China's Much-Bombed Capital:

    Pekin ceased to be the capital of the great Chinese Republic in 1928, when Nanking was made the official centre of administration. When Nanking was threatened in 1938 by the Japanese, the administration withdrew to Chunking, which has been the capital ever since. Here the Chinese have successfully resisted all attempts of the Japanese to oust them, though time and again the city has been bombed unmercifully by hostile aircraft. Quite recently Australia sent a Minister (Sir P. W. Eggleston) to Chungking, and China sent Mr. Hsu Mo to represent it at Canberra[?] Chungking is an ancient and interesting city, and the pictures published below ... [ILLUSTRATED]
