JAPAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN CAREFUL to deny "foreigners" photographs of her central Pacific islands, but recent US attacks have lifted the veil of secrecy from a number of her bases. Here are pictures (taken last month) of 2 of them. At left is Ponope, in the Carolines, which has been subjected to frequent attacks by planes of US Navy and 7th AAF, and at right is Saipan, farther north-west in the Marianas, photographed by a USN carrier-based aircraft during the carrier strike that hit home 1,300 miles south of Tokio on Febuary 23.
