We have selected this picture of three armoured cruisers because it shows at a glance the loss sustained as a result of the Germans' successful submarine attack. The three warships—Cressy, Aboukir, and Hogue—were of the one class. The Euryalus (formerly on the Australian station) was a sister ship. The cruisers cost about £750,000 each, and it is estimated that the disaster cost the British Navy fully 1000 lives. The small inset picture shows the build of the Cressy class.
