  2. POWER OF THE SUBMARINE : THREE BRITISH CRUISERS SUNK.

    We have selected this picture of three armoured cruisers because it shows at a glance the loss sustained as a result of the Germans' successful submarine attack. The three warships—Cressy, Aboukir, and Hogue—were of the one class. The Euryalus (formerly on the Australian station) was a sister ship. The cruisers cost about £750,000 each, and it is estimated that the disaster cost the British Navy fully 1000 lives. The small inset picture shows the build of the Cressy class. The sister ships are Sutlej (1899), Aboukir and Hogue (1900), Bacchante and Euryalus (1901). Each has a displacement of 12,200 tons, with engines equal ... [ILLUSTRATED]
