TROUBLESOME -TRACTION ENGINES.
' Complamts~wexe made 'at a- meeting : ot
the Unley City Goundlon Tuesday with
regard ,to damage 'caused . to. tar-dressed
roads hv traction, eneines and trailers cart
ing, metal through tne municipality. The
local' surveyor reported -that he had com
municated to the Government Engineer of
Roads and Bridges as follows:— 'I would
like to draw your attention tothe damage
caused, to the tar-dressed 'streets in1 par
ticular, by traction engines' end trailers
carting metal through; this corporation.
They seem to* pick out these ? roads to
travel over' wherever they can, and at the
present time seem to be going miles out of
their direct route in- order to pass along
Park and Mitchell streets, thence along
Goodwood road and-Hampton street, ell of
whieh are tardressed,' to the Glenelg road,
instead of following the- straight road be
tween Glen Osmond and Glenelg. -'The
heavy -ribbed wheels of --the- engine break
the tarred surface, and the trailers follow
ing the same track'soon break it up, ^speci
ally wheii the water gets inl A road surface
instructed at considerable1 expense and in
every way suitable' for ordinary traffic in
such streets' is very sppn destroyed. Could
you not give 'instructions to your men to
keep-off -the tanred streets?' Referring to
the same subject a ratepayer, in the course
of e letter to the council. ' stated;— The
residents of Mitchell ? street have .great
cause of complaint of the ' smoke nuisance
aiid the damage ' to property through tHe
vibratiou .caused by the Government's trac
tion engines drawing.' three ; or' four trucks
loaded with road metal along the street.
I «m certain that they travel at 'a speed of
six miles ah hour at the least, and to-night
the vibration upset a kettle of boiling water
off ; the fireplace in my dining room. It is
impossible to keep anything hanging- up-
right in the bouse.'' The 'council resolved
to' write to the Government suggesting that
legislation should be introduced to. Parlia-
ment with a view to cbntroj the nuisance.
