Spalding Methodist
21st Anniversary Huge
Success.
£360 RAISED.
Spalding Wed., June 15/49
[From Our Own Correspondent.]
After much careful planning and
good organising the 21st Anniversary
of the Spalding Methodist
Church was a great success over the
past weekend.
On Saturday night in the Spalding
Town Hall a reception to past
residents and visitors took the form
of a social evening. This was opened
with the National Anthem followed
by a pianoforte duet by Mrs
R. Dolan and Mrs. I. A. Wardle.
Mr. Samuel Trengove then welcomed
the visitors on behalf of the
Trustees and local Methodist people
and on behalf of the District. Mr.
Trengove said that there was a great
! warmth and meaning about the word
; "home" and he hoped that all who
. had come back home would still find
i that warmth prevailing. The even-
| ing then proceeded with games, com
1 petitions, sketches and items and the
1170 people present entered into the
i whole entertainment with enthusi
; asm and njoyment.
i Items were given by Mrs. Perkins,
| Miss Kathleen Sanders, Mrs Moseley,
•Mr. Chase,- all of Adelaide; Miss
; Eunice Tiver, Burra; Mrs. R. Dolan,
j,Mrs. S. H. R. Longmire, Rev. and
| Mrs. I. A. Wardle. The players in
the sketches were Miss Lis Stephen
son, Mr. Gordon Greig, Mr. Jack
.
Dolan, Mr. W. Kerslake, Mr. Jack
Stephenson and the Rev. Ivon Wardie.
At 10 p.m. the original members
of the Ladies Guild were called to
ihe stage for the ceremony of cutting
the cake. The Secretax-y of the
Trust, Mr. Arthur Stephenson, called
upon Mrs. E. Allen, Mrs. I. Page and
Mrs. A. Stephenson to light -the 21
candles and when the hall lights hafli
been switched off all present sang
"Happy Birthday" Mrs. S. Trengove
and Mrs. F. Bayfield blew the candles
out. The first President of the
Ladies Guild, Mrs. E. Moseley, cut
the cake. After singing the Song of
Australia the evening closed with
supper.
Two former .ministers Rev. Ian
Moulton and Pastor W. H. Perkins
spoke of their delight at being present
and expressed greeting. The
resident minister, Rev. Ivon A. Wardle
compered the evening.
The celebrations continued on
Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Church
building when the Rev? Ivon Wardle
conducted the service and welcomed
the Rev. B., S. Howland who had
been invited to return as the guest
speaker. Great 0 difficulty was experienced
in finding accomodation:
for the 240 people present, .'but after
gathering all available chairs very
few had to remain outside. Specially
prepared order of service was
used throughout the day.
A basket tea was served at 5 p.m.
in the Town Hall supper room, and
at G.30 the congregation returned to
ihe Church to hear a half hour recorded
session of 'Handel's "Messiah."
Thf
evening service was
again
conducted by the resident minister
and the Rev. B. S. Howland delivered
another very fine address with
a
very appropriate message for all-
During the evening service the President
of the Ladies' Guild, Mrs. S.
H. R. Longmire, presented to the
Trustees 2S yards of new carpet, installed
in the Church for the Celebrations,
which was accepted and
dedicated on the Trustees behalf by
the Minister,
Special singing was
rendered at both sendees.
The visiting
soloists were Miss
Kathleen
Sanders
(Tusmore), Mrs. W. H.
Perkins
(Hazehvood : Park),
Mr.
Keith Hore
(Clare.)
The
choir
rendered "God is a Spirit"
Break
forth into Joy" and "Send out thy
light."
The
Quartettes
"Nearer
still
Nearer" and "O House of Many
Mansions" were sung -by Miss Kathleen
Sanders, Mr. Keith Hore, and
the Rev. and Mrs. I. A. Wardle.
In connection with the celebrations
the Trustees organised a debt reduction
drive, and at both services on
Sunday the sum of £360 was dedicated
in offerings, towards the reduction
of the £400 debt on the property.
After the announcement of
this figure at the -close of the evening
service the congregation united
joyfully in singing the Dcxology.
