    Names given first to residence of Robert Richard TORRENS, built c.1842-47, demolished c.1850 in Woodville (now St Clair area) , and another residence erected on part of Bower Estate and land owned by Mr S R Clarke, then John Bristow HUGHES and later occupied by Robert Barr SMITH family. Both TORRENS and SMITH owned Torrens Park, Mitcham, S A, An estate and residence built in stages, initially by Mr Torrens (later Sir Robert TORRENS) established from 1853.
