    Bankstown.

NB Alternatives of name Australian Art Ceramic Pty. Limited, Australian Art Ceramics Pty. Limited & Australian Art Ceramic Products .... Australian Art Ceramic Productions. In the published notice of liquidation in 1958 there are multiple versions of "Australian Art Ceramics Pty. Limited".

Their address in 1955 was "now residing at 854 punchbowl Road, Punchbowl, New South Wales, intend to apply for Naturalisation" (SMH - Tuesday, January 18, 1955) - electorate of Lang at that time.

One article in the Herald of Sunday 9 November 1952 had the name misspelt as THALMAR : Other New Australian exhibitors will be Mr. and Mrs. Thalmar, of Belmore. Mr. Thalmar learnt pottery in Budapest. Figurines are their speciality and they are designed by Mrs. Thalmar, who is a sculptor."

There were ads in the SMH for jobs at the Punchbowl address as early as April 1953. An article below from October 1953 tells us that Mrs. V. Frieberg, of Medlow Bath, "has joined the staff of the Australian Art Ceramic Productions, where she will be employed as an artist. Prior to coming to Australia Mrs. Frieberg was employed on art productions on the Continent."
Jan Gluch (Gluck) did some work for Irene Kalma according to the Rameking.

But in 1958 : "By an order made by the Honourable Mr. Justice Charles McLelland, Judge in Equity, with the above matter, dated the ninth day of June, 1958, on the petition of Pates Potteries Pty. Limited, it was ordered that the abovenamed Company, Australian Art Ceramics Pty. Limited, be wound up by this Court under the provisions of the Companies Act.

In January 1959 this advert appeared in the SMH : IN the matter of the Companies Act, 1936, and in the matter of KALMAR TRADING PTY. LIMITED.—Notice of MeetING OF CREDITORS TO CONSIDER WINDING-UP RESOLUTION.— Notice is hereby given that a meeting of creditors of the above named Company will be held at the office of John Ramsay Partridge, F.C.A. (Aust.), 383 George-street, Sydney, on Thursday, the fifth day of February, 1959, at 10.30 in the forenoon for the purpose of considering the Company's affairs, the Company having convened an Extraordinary General Meeting of its members to be held at the same place and on the same date at 10 o'clock in the forenoon for the purpose of considering, and if deemed expedient, passing as an Extraordinary Resolution the following Resolution:—"That the Company cannot by reason of its liabilities continue its business and so be wound up voluntarily and that Mr. John Ramsay Partridge, F.C.A. (Aust.), be appointed Liquidator of the affairs of Kalmar Trading Pty. Limited". By Order of the Board, JULIUS KALMAR, Director. Dated this 22nd day of January, 1959."

Spurred on by a $5 purchase yesterday of a lustre vase.
I found out that Pates had forced the liquidation of "Australian Art Ceramics Pty. Limited" on June 9, 1958.
But it seems that there was life after AACP - note the name of the firm above. I also found one reference in 1954 to "Australian Art Ceramic Productions" !!!!
Here is an article in the Australian Womens' Weekly of Wednesday 7 February 1962, p 18:
"IRENA KALMAR assembling the jigsaw pieces of her ceramic murals which resemble mosaics. Irena, maker of mosaics.
SHE has honey-blond hair. She has the deepest sea-green eyes you ever saw-and she has hit on an idea that should be a winner.
Hungarian - born Sydney artist Irena Kalmar with years of Continental and local experience in ceramics, is creating ceramic murals that are the dead spit of mosaics - with this difference:
They allow greater freedom of color choice and design. They're less tedious to produce, and, therefore, far less costly than orthodox mosaics.
With commerce and suburbia currently going crazy over mosaic murals (one Sydney pharmaceutical firm couldn't be prouder of its 47ft. by 17ft. facade of Italian glass mosaic) Irena got to work to perfect her simulated type.
She finished a long day at her Bankstown ceramic factory to work through the night experimenting and firing before she finally had the answer.
The answer-as shown in the picture above - couldn’t be more mosaic . . . colorful, intricate, indestructible.
All the old mosaic art and draughtsmanship are still there added to now by some pretty tense moments over kilns-but the laborious cutting and chipping of thousands of minute pieces is out.
Where normally these thousands of chips had to be fitted into mosaic pattern.
Irena's irregular but practical sized pieces are quickly and economically assembled into murals.
Her "modern mosaics" come in original designs, or are based on contemporary or old master paintings.
They can be made to order to picture or full wall size. Estimated cost of a 15ft. by 9ft. mural is about £1500 "far, far cheaper," claims Irena, "than similar-size mosaics." "IRENA rather than Irene too - a 'factory' in Bankstown

Does anyone know where the Kalmar or AACP factory was ??? I ask because I have read on the net of a variety of places . The list that I have now involves : Lakemba Street Belmore; Punchbowl; Riverwood; Bankstown now too according to the Womens' Weekly article above. Can I note that the Pates Factory was at 61 Lakemba St. Belmore ...... that would mean two potteries in Belmore on Lakemba Street. Or did Pates take over AACP after the liquidation? But my questions remain. Where was the Kalmar factory? Where was the AACP factory?

In the Sydney Morning Herald of Tues. January 18, 1955 both Julius and Irene published notices of intention to become Australian citizens. The spelling of her name was Irene at that time, I believe. And it is of importance when researching these people too !!! Search engines are pretty unforgiving of bad spelling and 'errors' of any type. I've just spent the last half hour correcting the errors in the article on how the Kalmars got their children into Australia in December 1955. What an incredible story !!!They spent 8, 000 pounds !!! Almost a quarter of a million dollars in today's money I think. Not bad for people who had only been in the country since June 1949. Kalmar pottery was probably about getting enough money together to get the kids back !!! And making a new life in Australia. I'm in awe of them !!!

Trudy Viles found two articles on Trove that tell something of their story .... "The arrival of two teenage Hungarian sisters by B.O.A.C. Constellation to-day was the climax to a seven-year battle by their parents for the custody of the children from their Communist dominated country.
The sisters escaped from behind the Iron Curtain, through "unofficial" channels in a truckload of fruit and vegetables.
They are Irene Kalmar,16, and 15-year-old Maria.
In July, 1948, Mr. and Mrs.Julius Kalmar decided to escape from the Communist rule in Hungary, buy would not risk their children's lives in their dash for freedom. Irene and Maria stayed with their grandmother.
After waiting unsuccessfully for several months in Europe for news of the children, they came to Australia.
Then the battle to have their children with them began.
Mr. and Mrs. Kalmar returned to Europe last July, determined to find and assist their children to freedom. Mr. Kalmar went to Turkey, whilst, his wife worked from Vienna.
They contacted agents and paid, them to find Irene and Maria.
One found the sisters still living with their grandmother.
Mrs. Kalmar said she got in touch with her daughters, and shortly after, theagent met the girls and smuggled them across the border.
Mr. and Mrs. Kalmar today were £8,000 poorer for the search, but their two daughters were worth more than any sum of money.” they said.

The second article fills in a bit of domestic detail and is meant to be a Happy Xmas story: Mr. Ralph L. Harry, Australian Consul-General in Geneva, played Santa Claus to two young refugees from behind the Iron Curtain last week.
He cut red tape to a minimum so the two refugees could be "home," in Australia, for Christmas.

The refugees, 16-year old Irene Kalmar and her 15-year-cld sister, Maria, arrived in Sydney by B.O.A.C. Constellation with their parents today.
The girls were left behind with their grandmother when their parents fled from Hungary after it come under Communist domination in1947. For nearly eight years Mrs. Kalmar tried in vain to get her children out. from behind the Iron Curtain "through official channels."
Three months ago she and her husband flew to Vienna to try “unofficial" channels.
After weeks of unsuccessful attempts to get Irene and Maria across the border, a kindly truck driver smuggled them out hidden beneath a load of fruit and vegetables. Then she again ran into red tape. Consular officials in Vienna simply shrugged their shoulders and said: "Impossible."
Then Mr. Harry came on the scene. With assistance of a friend in Salzburg, he slashed the red tape and had plane tickets, visas, and all the other necessary documents ready for the girls within 48 hours."
Julius KALMAR. Flat 15, 25 Wolseley rd point piper.

Jan Gluch (Gluck) did some work for Irene Kalmar - "Jan Gluck was born in Denmark on the 19th of December 1919 to Polish parents. He was part of the great post war migration, coming to Sydney, Australia in January 1957. He arrived with wife Erna, born 12th February 1919, son Ivan born 17th December 1943 and daughter Bente born 18th February 1945. They arrived in Sydney on that famous migrant ship the “Castel Felice”. Jan had been a well-known potter in Denmark, having worked at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain works.

He worked at Pates Pottery at 61 Lakemba Road Belmore while living at the nearby migrant hostel at Villawood. The original “Frank Rock” moulds for these fish ramekins were still at the Easton Pottery in Willoughby, Sydney, when Jan began renting it in 1958. Henrietta Easton had stopped working there in 1957.

Jan produced these ramekins with almost identical glazing to Frank, except for the hole in the tail. He also did some work for Irene Kalmar during this time. European migrants to both Sydney and Melbourne brought skills with them that enhanced the Australian art pottery scene. Jan also had potteries at Brookvale and later Blaxland. He also demonstrated pottery making in the early days of television in Australia.

Jan, having trained in Denmark was one of these talented artists from Europe who were employed by local manufacturers. Some then went on to form their own potteries such as Kalmar Pottery (Australian Art Ceramic Products). In 1960, Jan started his pottery school at Brookvale, another Sydney suburb. It closed in 1967. He died in Sydney at the age of 50 in 1969. Son Ivan began in the plastics industry but later also became a talented and highly qualified potter who went on to re-establish his fathers’ pottery in 1973 at Blaxland in New South Wales."

Kalmar Pottery Australian Art Ceramics Products (AACP) Early 1950's to Late 1960's From: Encyclopaedia Of Australian Potter's Marks 2nd Edition by Geoff Ford. Irene Kalmar at her studio in Sydney, made a variety of small slip cast vases, bowls, etc., and a few hand made pieces some she hand decorated and marked: Irene Kalmar painted early 1960's. Other Marks: Kalmar impressed early to mid 1960's. Kalmar (in semi circle) impressed early to mid 1960's. From:The People's Potteries by Dorothy Johnston. Principals: Julius Kalmar, Irene Kalmar. Address: Lakemba Street Belmore; Punchbowl; Riverwood. Operational: Early 1950's - Mid 1960's. Distinguishing Marks: Kalmar impressed; AACP impressed. At some point after the pottery was established the Kalmar's registered it as a limited liability company. After making this administrative change, Kalmar Pottery also changed it's name and thereafter was Australian Art Ceramics products (AACP). Some pots, however, bear both names, indicating that AACP was added to the original production model. My Notes: Some distinguishing features of Kalmar pottery are the use of gold guilding some heavily guilded by Irene herself these pieces are highly prized. The use of 3 painted strokes to signify the hooves on horses, donkeys and deers. Pieces from the Kalmar bird series are also avidly collected.
