Several traditions of bagpipe playing exist in Australia, including Irish, Macedonian, and the most common, Scottish. Pipe and drum bands have served civilian and military functions in Australia since the early nineteenth century. Australia has been a successful exporter of bagpipe playing: an all-women pipe band toured England early in the twentieth century, and the Victoria Police Pipe Band won the world championship in Scotland in 1998.
