By the year of Federation in 1901, more than 500 organs existed in Australia, most of fine quality and some of world renown. The organ has been used to accompany worship in all major Christian traditions in Australia. The late nineteenth century saw a rise in concert organ playing, with many instruments built for exhibition buildings, town halls, and theatres.

We're pulling out all stops in our organ theme!

Orchestra and organ Musical performances have proved very attractive features of the Garden Palace, despite the defective acoustic properties of the building. They are generally given on the orchestra, pianoforte recitals predominating. The organ, built by Messrs. Gray and Davison, of London, was purchased by Sir Daniel Cooper, Bt., at a cost of D600, for the exhibition. Our view shows the orchestra, as arranged for the inaugural performance, under the direction of Signor Giorza, on September 17, 1879. The bust in front of the orchestra is that of Sir Hercules Robinson, the former governor of New South Wales / edited by John Plummer ; Richards & Co
