Music resources theme - Bush and beach - Rural life thumbnail image
    Public

Two iconic symbols of Australia, the bush and the beach, are well represented in Australian music. References to birds and birdsongs, rivers, scorching heat, the bush cry ‘coo-ee’, and pristine beaches have been used and reused in all genres of music. With farming once being the cornerstone of Australia's economy - as the saying goes, we "rode off the sheep's back" - it is hardly surprising that farming activities such as shearing and harvesting became subjects for songwriters.

Farmers and other agricultural workers themselves commonly played and sang to fight the tyranny of isolation, adapting inherited traditions to their own rural life.
