    Public

Two iconic symbols of Australia, the bush and the beach, are well represented in Australian music. References to birds and birdsongs, rivers, scorching heat, the bush cry ‘coo-ee’, and pristine beaches have been used and reused in all genres of music. Since colonial times, composers and performers have frequently responded to and reinforced the myths surrounding intrepid explorers, shearers, and the rough shacks of early bush settlers. The bush cry ‘coo-ee’ was described by Isaac Nathan by the 1840s and has featured in many songs since.
